Muffling a yawn behind a closed fist, Emrys did his best to stand at attention despite the ungodly hour he'd been woken up at. His superior, damn his blackened little heart, had informed him upon waking that Emrys' two other teammates were due to arrive at any time. 'Any time' was apparently 3 am in the mountain range their base was situated in.
He hadn't even known he'd have team mates for this new job. Sighing softly and struggling not to yawn again, he watched at the plane slowly docked. Fighting down the annoyed feeling that he always got when he wasn't properly informed about a mission - he'd thought that he was the only person they'd hired on to fly a dragon - and tried his hardest to look alert and ready to greet these new people. And silently hoped they were people he could get along with.
--
As the plane began to close in on the Himalayas, a vague steel blur against a bruised-black early morning sky, Inuk continued to snooze in his chair, head tilted back and arms crossed over his chest. The occasional turbulence made the plane jolt, causing the Greenlander to murmur and shuffle before returning to his light slumber.
Once the plane actually began its descent, an attendant came up in time to wake him. Giving the cute girl a lazy smile and winking his thanks, Inuk stretched up, spreading his arms in a great yawn and cricking his neck. Ruffling his hair, the Inuit spared a glance at the bundle of cloth occupying a nearby seat, shrugging before picking up the large duffel bag next to it.
A matter of moments later and the Greenlander was at the door, barely waiting on the walkway to actually touch down on the tarmac before jumping off. Standing up with a grin, Inuk made his easy loping way towards the inner hangar, giving no visible reaction to the frigid breezes still flowing in as the large doors closed. He looked around, trying to spot the supposed commander of this entire debacle, and after a few sweeps finally managed to spot the Welshman.
Quirking an eyebrow at the sheer height difference, Inuk chuckled, giving a lazy salute. "Yo~ Lance Corporal Inuk Rasmussen, AKA, Professionally Crazy Bastard, at your service!"
--
The so-called 'bundle of cloth' started to move a little bit when Tal heard the flight attendant wake up someone else on the plane. Must have been that huge piece of flesh that was snuffling earlier. She had gotten a peek when the man had first started making noises, but decided to ignore him and go back to hiding under the blanket. Talei had heard that the base was somewhere cold, and didn't exactly like that fact. She would try to get as warm as she could before they landed. Which apparently was soon.
As she heard the other lumber off, she slowly untangled herself from the blanket and pulled the hood of her parka up. At least the navy was kind enough to give her appropriate clothing for this environment. She grabbed her bag and hoisted it over her shoulder, glad she always packed light anyways because the new equipment she was given wasn't exactly feathers. She slowly made her way to the bridge, already disliking the small blasts of cold air she could feel coming from the other room. When Tal got to the dismembarkment chamber, and really felt the chill in the air, she had to suppress a small shudder. She was going to have to live in this? Tal hunched more into her jacket and waited for the walkway to touch down.
Tal was taken by surprise when the monster-of-a-man in front of her jumped down to the ground. Giving a roll of the eyes, she waited till the actual walkway touched down before slowly walking down behind him, hearing the introduction halfway down. She glanced over to where the other directed this greeting and noticed the other man in front of them. He must have been the Vice Air Marshal they were supposed to meet today. Once her feet touched the solid ground, she stepped around the 'professional crazy bastard', pulled her heels together and gave a formal salute. "Sergeant Talei. Honor to meet you sir." She directed at Emrys, keeping her attention directed at him.
--
Emrys, back straight and posture to match blinked in faint surprise at the tall man who jumped off the side of the plane. His arm twitched, automatically raising to salute despite the man's calm and lazy attitude. He was caught between being amused, being worried and just plain old being tired. "Lance Corporal. It's a pleasure to meet you." he spoke quietly, letting the acoustics of the hangar carry his words over to the odd man. He was vaguely reminded a bit of his older brother Dylan - probably the confident swagger in his steps - and wondered if that would be a good thing or a bad thing.
Stifling another yawn behind his hand, his attention to the Lance-Corporal was diverted from a much shorter - even if he was only a slight bit shorter than Emrys himself, the poor kid looked dwarfed beside the much taller Inuk - young man. Replying to the crisp salute with one of his own, Emrys smiled in what he hoped was a calm and confident manner. This would be his first real challenge as leader - getting along with his new team. "Sergeant. Thank you for that. I am Air Vice-Marshall Emrys Kirkland. I hope we can all work well together in the coming months."
--
Inuk jumped slightly at the sudden appearance of the third member, blinking comically and wondering where the hell he came from. Recovering quickly, though, the Inuit gave him a broad smile, laughing quietly.
Then he turned his attention back to the squad leader, idly fumbling with his lip piercing. "Here's hoping, Officer," he said, giving the Welshman a friendly smile. "I'm a fairly easy-going guy, so, as long as you guys can put up with me, we're good." His grin broadened, and he chuckled, "Otherwise, prepare to hate me."
He hoisted his bag higher on his shoulder, looking around the hangar. "So, where to first? I mean, do they give us breakfast, at least, or are we just supposed to toughen up and deal?"
--
Tal nodded at Emrys and let her luggage slip off her shoulder, adjusting her grip slightly as she responded. "Yes, I hope we will be able to manage as a team." Both hands tightened on the strap as she looked over Emrys. He seemed friendly enough, and while his haircut was a little... girly, he seemed like he could handle himself quite well.
The other man, however, seemed a little... off beat. 'Otherwise, prepare to hate me'? Was that really something one should say to a superior officer? When Inuk asked about breakfast, Tal couldn't help but perk an eyebrow. He hadn't eaten before he left? Well, maybe that was just her. Tal slowly started walking forward to join Emrys, just wanting to get out of the hanger and to somewhere hopefully warmer.
--
The smile on his face faltered slightly at the 'prepare to hate me'. That... was not a good sign. "Ah... yes. I'm sure we can get you something to eat. The night staff will be off duty soon, so the Mess Hall should have cooked something for them..." he lowered his arm and gestured for the two of them to follow. "Um... would you like to stow your baggage in your rooms first or...?" he trailed off, still completely unsure how to act around them.
Tal seemed to be a decent enough young man. At least, on the surface. Inuk made him incredibly nervous that he would accidently do something that would make the entirety of their new mission hard to deal with. Licking chapped lips, he wished his hair wasn't tied back. It was one of those moments where he'd just like to hide behind his bangs and pretend he wasn't in charge.
--
"Night staff? So, it is more than just us, then?" Inuk inquired, grinning back at Emrys. Perhaps it was appropriate the guy was Welsh, judging by how sheepish he was. He looked like the kind of guy Inuk could walk circles around if he talked fast enough, but the Greenlander was fairly sure that his officers back home wouldn't place him under a total pushover. Not after last time.
Besides, he was a Vice Air Marshal, yeah? Not many people get there just by kissing ass. He decided to go easy on the guy for now--he looked decent. As long as he could figure out that it was best just to let him be, he would return the favor.
At the mention of rooms, the Inuit nodded, gesturing on. "Lead the way, Officer," he called cheerfully, falling back and forcing the brunet to take charge. In the meantime, Inuk glanced at the other (shorter) airman, trying to get a read on him, too. He seemed like the classic by-the-book type so far, judging by the slightly sour expression, which either meant one of two things for the Greenlander: Sgt. Tal was either hyper-competent, or Inuk's new chew-toy. Either way, all in good fun.
The Inuit grinned, chuckling. "So, what, are ya part ninja or something? Completely snuck up on me back there and I don't remember you off the plane."
--
Night staff? Hmm, so it wasn't just them at this base then? That was strange, but not totally unexpected. But it seemed as if they were going to be shown their rooms first. As Tal followed Emrys, she wondered what kind of team they would make. She got some form of an answer when Inuk asked if she was a ninja. Oh for the love of... Pulling back the hood, she looked up at the taller man and used a voice that had no hint of any emotion. "Do I look Asian?"
Tal turned her head back towards Emrys. "As for the plane, I was there. I was sitting two seats back and to the left." She kept her tone neutral for now, not wanting to start a fight or something. After all, they had just met. He was going to calm down at some point, right? Dear god she hoped so. She did not want to deal with a man-child, by any stretch.
--
"Well of course there's a night staff." Emrys couldn't help the faint chuckle that crept up his throat. "There's no honest way they'd expect us to take care of ourselves and run missions at the same time." And about as likely as they would leave me in charge. he thought to himself. "There are two staffs - day and night. There are engineers, cooks, doctors, gunners, electricians and a whole slew of other people here to make sure that we never need for anything."
Heading into a large elevator, Emrys turned about with a smart snap that came from too many years of military training exercises and waited long enough for the two to situate themselves wherever they wanted before he pressed a button that would take them down into the heart of the Nest. "Our living quarters are one level down from the launching bay - which is the level we just passed - with the kitchens directly below us. The next level down is the hospital and gym, with the bottom level being where the boilers are to keep this entire building at least somewhat bearable temperature wise. Up on the very top is the command base where our superiors will be sending down orders from." He finished just as the doors slid open fluidly, letting the three of them spill out into a dim hallway.
"Just down this hall is the common room for the three of us. There are three more halls connecting off of it - one for each of us. I've already claimed the far right one, but if either of you have a problem with your room let me know and I'll see what I can do." Just as they stepped into the Commons - a large room with three large gray couches positioned around a heater. "The engineers are still trying to figure out how to get radio and television signals to go through all the solid rock that surrounds us, so there isn't much in the way of entertainment held here. Though you are allowed to bring in things like books and things of mechanical nature - the only rule is that you cannot bring anyone from outside of the base back here. I'm sure you already knew that, but it bears repeating."
--
Tal's deadpan reply to his question only made Inuk grin more. He had meant it to be a complement (backhanded as it was), but if Tal decided to make it a point of contention, who was Inuk to deny him? Raising his pierced eyebrow, the Inuit quickly pretended to look the other over, humming in thought.
"...Nah, not really--short enough, yeah, but too dark." He chuckled, rolling his shoulders and hoisting the bag higher. "That was you? Thought it was just an extra bundle of blankets or something. Good thing I didn't try and pick you up, huh?"
He looked up as Emrys detailed the staff, whistling slightly and raising both eyebrows in amusement. "All of them for the three of us? Ha--it's a regular suite!" The Greenlander laughed, shaking his head as he stepped into the elevator, leaning against one wall and fumbling with his lip ring with a hum. "Nice change from the barracks, that's for sure."
He listened as the Welsh officer continued on to detail the layout of the base, paying careful attention in spite of his laid-back position. He smirked slightly at the 'bearable temperature' part, privately wondering how long A.V.M Ems would have lasted back at home before going icicle. Eh, not everyone could've been born on a glacier.
He followed the officer out into the common area, once again amused by the idea of so much space for three people. Talk about a cushy government job, if they ever got to use those rooms off dragon-back. "I call the left," he told Tal, jerking his head slightly and winking at the Fijian.
He glanced up at the 'entertainment' bit, chewing on his lip-ring a bit at the 'no radio' part, but grinned anew at the 'no-one-from-out-of-base' bit. "So, we gotta flirt with staff then?" he joked. "Unless she's okay with having me at her place."
Muffling a yawn behind a closed fist, Emrys did his best to stand at attention despite the ungodly hour he'd been woken up at. His superior, damn his blackened little heart, had informed him upon waking that Emrys' two other teammates were due to arrive at any time.
