SO. This thread! Herein we list sources of steampunk inspiration. Books, webcomics, films, music--whatever we can come up with!
SO, to kick us off, a couple of book titles and authors:
Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan series:
It is the cusp of World War I, and all the European Powers are arming up. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans (Clankers) use Kerosene-driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British (Darwinists) employ fabricated animals as their weaponry (fabricated animals are genetically engineered animals. The scientists mix genes from several animals to make new ones that are used for everything from labor to weapons). Their Leviathan is a hydrogen-filled whale airship, part of the British fleet.
Aleksandar Ferdinand, Prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, is on the run. He is fleeing German assassins who killed his parents. He tries to stay under cover. All he has is a battle-torn walker, called a Stormwalker, a loyal crew of men, and Count Volger, his caretaker and mentor.
Deryn Sharp is a commoner, a girl disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. She is a brilliant airman, but her secret is in constant danger of being discovered.
With the Great War brewing, Alek's and Deryn's paths cross in the most unexpected way, taking them both aboard the Leviathan on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure, one that will change both their lives forever.

Kenneth Oppel's Matt Cruse series:
Set in an imaginary past where giant airships rule the skies, Airborn is the story of Matt Cruse, the fifteen-year-old cabin boy of the 900 foot luxury ship, Aurora. Hundreds of feet over the Pacificus Ocean, Matt fearlessly performs a dramatic rescue to save an old man from his crippled hot-air balloon. Before he dies, the stranger tells Matt about the fantastic, impossible creatures he has seen flying through the clouds. Matt dismisses the story as the ravings of a dying man, but when a beautiful, bold girl arrives on the Aurora a year later, determined to prove the story is true, Matt finds himself caught up in her quest. But can he and Kate solve the mystery--before pirates, shipwreck, and frightening predators end their voyage forever?
