(So,considering La Madre Maria's destruction is imminent Dorra and I wanted to do a little thread leading up to it.
Also, for the sake of these threads/event I'm temporarily being Spain... I apologize XD)
It had been a long day. A long lazy day, not that Afonso could complain as he leaned against the railing of La Madre Maria, smiling fondly as the wind blew through his hair sending his long bangs flying this way and that. It was nice to have a moment of peace, given everything that was going on. The crew was still dwindling, and while Antonio was acting like it was fine Afonso couldn’t help but worried. That coupled with a small skirmish with a military ship earlier that week had sent the Portuguese man on edge. More than once he’d jumped at the smallest of noises. Antonio thought it was the funniest thing in the world.
One day he was going to make good on his promise and push the Captain off a dock and into the water. Maybe he would do that next time they docked. He was sure Antonio would deserve-
Two hands squeezed his sides. Afonso nearly toppled over the railing as he jumped. Then in a blink he had spun around, stumbling away from the laughing Spaniard while protectively holding his sides.
“Idiot! I could’ve fallen overboard!” He felt his cheeks flushed – especially spotting Anaïs giggling behind Antonio.
“Aw~ I wouldn’t have let you fall.” Antonio smiled, Afonso rolled his eyes. He really wondered how the Captain could be so cheerful.
Then again, it was Spain.” The little voice that had been more prominent since Anaïs and his adventure whispered. As usual Afonso opted to ignore it, instead watching his Captain with a frown.
Antonio responded by pinching his cheeks and forcing Afonso to smile. “Hermano! If you keep looking so serious you’ll get wrinkles!”
“Get off.” He choked out, trying to swat the hands away. Eventually he managed to free himself, putting Antonio into a headlock and giving him a noogie.
“Aah! Hermano leggo!” Antonio squawked, his turn to flail now.
The few members who were on deck walked by them without even looking – completely used to the Captain and Navigator’s brotherly fights.
The definition of the word 'cold' had changed for the brown-haired seventeen year old, as it was early evening on the Madre Maria, and Anaïs didn't even sport a coat; she wore vest and a sleeveless white top with pants and her high boots; not even shivering in the wind as the ship moved along in the sky. Indeed, after the incident with Afonso, the air no longer felt cold most of the time. She wondered if this was a plus, seeing as how horrible that memory was, but at least she could admit that she was stronger than before. A bit, anyway.
Regardless, she was enjoying her free time with the Captain, his usual cheerful attitude was always so uplifting for her. She admired him so; he was brave and nothing seemed to bother him at all. Even if he showed anger, it was never for too long. Indeed, the two men were who she spent the most time with, save a brief, but meaningful, romance with a recruit not too long ago, but ended after he left. It was still bittersweet to think about, but the Captain and Afonso were pivotal in her recovery of heartbreak. She loved the two dearly, wondering if they were siblings in a past life.
Together with Antonio, they snuck behind Afonso who was deep in thought, with Antonio wrapping his arms around him. Of course Afonso reacted negatively, but she couldn't help but giggle. They really did have a great relationship. It usually ended in a headlock, and this time was no exception.
“Haha, you two! You always get along so well~” She giggled again, and walked towards the railing, leaning over the top. She looked into the clouds, smiling to herself. “It makes me miss my siblings a little bit!” Her gentle smile let them know she didn't feel sad.
The little fight halted at Anaïs’s words. Even while she smiled to let them know that she wasn’t sad – Afonso and Antonio both couldn’t help but worry. It was interesting in Afonso’s mind how quickly he’d become endeared to both Anaïs and Antonio. Both had become the younger siblings he’d never had, both filling some hole in his heart he’d never realized he’d had until he’d met them both.
Antonio had had similar thoughts as well, as Afonso had discovered on late night when he hadn’t been able to sleep. He’d found the Captain lying on the deck staring at the stars. Afonso had gone to his room to grab a blanket, and promptly dropped it on Antonio. They’d spent the whole night talking about the most pointless of things, and how Anaïs was truly the little sister that both had always wanted.
Which was why when she spoke, despite the gentle smile she wore, they exchanged a look. Afonso let Antonio go, two impish smiles playing across their faces that would make anyone think they really were related.
Afonso reached out, catching Anaïs’s arm and tugging her away from the railing. Because they were not going to risk her losing her balance. He exchanged one more impish look with Antonio before the two commenced in tickling Anaïs.
This did not go as planned. She didn't have time to react when she felt a pull at her arm, as she was immediately overwhelmed with giggles as they both tickled her. Inhumane! Cruel!
“Ahhhgh! Ahhh-s-stop hehe you two ahaha!” She flailed her arms at him, hitting them in her attempts to push them away. When that didn't work she opted to move into a fetal position and protect her vitals. “Ahhhhhh this isn't how it's supposed to work!!”, she wailed through a fit of laughs, “Only the two of you pick on each other!”
Eventually the two stopped,if only to give her a breather, and she fake-pouted at the two, with strands of hair falling on her face.
“Ah but it’s an older brother’s duty to pick on his little sister sometimes.” Antonio pointed out, a fondness in his voice as he reached out to brush the strands of hair out of her face. Afonso nodded in agreement behind him.
“Plus it gets boring just picking on Toni.” He shrugged, ignoring the pout he was getting from them both now. These were moments he cherished. Where they were able to just laugh and be together without any threat.
Unless the threat was Antonio’s mischievous expression. Afonso frowned, feeling suddenly unnerved when he watched the Captain whispered to Anaïs – trying and failing to listen to what he was saying.
“I think,” Antonio whispered, glancing to make sure Afonso couldn’t hear. “It’s the young siblings jobs too to pick on their big brother. Think we should try again~?”
Afonso was seriously debating if he should just start running.
An evil grin formed on her face. “You are very right Captain. A younger sibling must pick on the older one.” Antonio grinned as well, but it was short lived as Anaïs tackled him to the floor, tickling ferociously. It took both the boys by surprise, but Afonso roared with laughter. She stood up after she finished Antonio, putting one foot on his shoulder, grinning and forming a peace sign with one hand. “Victory!”
When she looked at Afonso, he seemed to look proud. But her evil grin did not dissapear. “You're next.” She ran after him as he fled.
Antonio flailed, shouting “no fair” over and over again between his laughter. Attempting his best to protect himself from her tickling assault. How unfair! He was the Captain! Afonso meanwhile had burst out laughing, not even attempting to hide it. This had been the last thing either of them had anticipated.
When the attack ceased Antonio laid on the deck catching his breath. Completely and utterly defeated. Anaïs was a sneaky one. He would have to remember that for the future.
Afonso grinned, ready to congratulate her. However when the evil grin was turned on him he took a step back. Then his eyes went wide and he spun around, running as fast as he could. “Catch me if you can irmãzinha!”
There was no way he’d let her catch him. He’d had enough tickling for the day thank you very much.
Ahhh, why did he run so fast? Anaïs ran out of breath before she caught him, stopping to hunch over. “Captain, that's your fault! He's so used to running away from you I can't catch him!” She collapsed dramatically onto the floor, lying on her back. But she was still smiling.
“Heheh. I'd like it for you two to meet my siblings back home. They'd love you two!” She sighed happily, closing her eyes. “My parents too, and Artista. But I don't want to go back yet. Not until I have something to bring back to them.” Her face straightened. “If I brought you two before then, Mare would scold me for bringing extra mouths to feed without warning!” She laughed, imagining her mothers voice perfectly. “But one day!”
“Waah! It’s not my fault!” Antonio had gotten up while she had chased Afonso, pouting at the implication. It only lasted for a moment though. The easy going smile was back within moments as he pushed himself back up, only to take a seat where Anaïs had collapsed dramatically. “Ah~ That would be nice! I’d like to meet your family one day!”
“Let’s just keep the fact we’re pirates to ourselves then.” Afonso chimed in, walking over and taking a seat on Anaïs’s other side. He could just imagine how Anaïs’s family would react.
“Why thought?” Afonso looked at Antonio, rolling his eyes.
“Because I don’t feel like getting a stern lecture from her parents?”
“Hahaha! I think they'd just scold me for being one, not you two. Though they'd ask why you'd take me in of all the people in the world!” She scratched her cheek. “I know I was pretty useless at the start.”
“Oh no, no! You were never useless.” Antonio shook his head, reaching over to poke Anaïs’s nose. “You have always been a very important part of La Madre Maria~. Even when you were just beginning.”
“And you’ve grown a lot since then.” Afonso offered a hesitant smile, recalling their frozen adventure. Opting not to let the statement hang, in fear of awkwardness he continued. “Plus it’s hard to be more useless then our air headed captain.”
“Exactly- Hey!” Antonio glared, half-heartedly, when Afonso started laughing.
She blushed slightly at what Antonio said, then scrunched her nose when he poked her. But she was happy to know that she was the only one who thought she was useless at the beginning. It provided comfort and ease, and as Afonso teased Antonio again, she smiled and laughed along with them. Even if the frozen incident had left some scars, deeply, she was glad that it happened. For if it hadn't, she wouldn't have been able to ask this.
"I think, the next time we raid somewhere searching for a new piece, I want to come. I can't let you guys do my work for me!" For the longest time, she had avoided going on raids with them, and if she did, she would stay in the back and as far away from the action as possible. She felt she would be a burden to her crew, but now, she knew she was stronger than before. "Are we any closer to finding a new map piece?"
Antonio and Afonso looked at one another in response to her statement. She wanted to come along on the next raid? As in actually being involved opposed to in the back, safe? Afonso frowned, despite knowing that this was bound to happen sooner or later. Anaïs was growing, but he still didn’t like the idea of her being in danger. “I’m not sure-”
“If you promise to be very careful!” Antonio cut in, looking at her worriedly. Anaïs joining them on raids and being in danger was inevitable. They were pirates of La Madre Maria after all. This was the life they lead. And while he shared Afonso’s thoughts and views on keeping Anaïs safe (because what older brother would want his baby sister in danger? A crazy one!) it was obvious after the frozen incident she had grown. That and no matter how hard they tried Anaïs would in the end be put in some sort of danger. Especially if she remained.
“Anto-”
“So! Promise you’ll be very, very careful?” He held out his pinky to her, completely disregarding the look Afonso was shooting him. Aaah, he’d be in for it later but Afonso had to realize their little sister was growing up! When Anaïs had pinky promised the worried look had faded back to Antonio’s smile, looking at the silently fuming Afonso. “Aha, why don’t we ask Señor Navegador~? He always knows. When he isn’t getting us lost!”
Afonso’s cheeks went hot. “I only got us lost once-”
“Nu-uh, I have records of how many times you got us lost~” Antonio grinned under the murderous look. Afonso counted backwards from ten, before giving a small huff and turning to look in the opposite direction. Antonio rolled his eyes, nudging Anaïs. “He really can’t take a joke hm?”
“From everything I can figure out,” Afonso mumbled, trying to ignore the laughter at his expense. “We’re close to a couple different locations. Though whether they’d still be there or not is another question entirely.”
They reacted as much as she expected them to. Afonso looked as if he'd been punched in the gut, and Antonio was worried, but open to the idea. She smiled confidently, and pinky promised Antonio to be careful. "I promise." Antonio seemed satisfied, but Afonso looked angry. She opened her mouth to talk to him, to comfort or convince him, but Antonio managed to distract him.
She laughed along with him. It was true, Afonso...may have gotten them lost a few times, but everyone makes mistakes! She giggled again. "No, he can't~"
She nodded at what he said. So they were close...or at least they might have been, if they were still there. That gave her time to prepare then. "Well, that gives me time. I've been thinking a lot about it lately! That...you know, I should have a weapon." She tried to ignore the looks on their faces. "I was thinking...a taser of some kind. I'd like...to not kill anybody, if I can. I've been lucky enough that I haven't...so if possible, uhm..." She trailed off, knowing that this was a bombshell she didn't know if they could handle yet.
A weapon. Anaïs wanted a weapon. She wanted-
“Ah, we can see about getting you something next time we dock!” Antonio smiled, though a bit strained when he noticed the incredulous stare Afonso was giving Anaïs. It seemed like one too many things to drop on the poor Navigator. Not that Antonio blamed him. He didn’t like the idea anymore than him! “Or we can see what’s in the weapons room! Though I think it’s mostly guns and potentially lethal things… Right Afonso?”
Afonso was still too shocked to actually say anything, but nodded in agreement. Though it could be argued he wasn’t sure what he was agreeing too.
She decided it was best to drop the subject for now, before Afonso's head exploded.
"Afonso, please don't think I'll become violent or anything! It's just...it's only going to be for defensive purposes, alright?" She looked away, knowing it was probably going in one ear and out. "Ahaha, d-don't worry about it now, we can talk about it later! Ok?"
“Hermano?” Antonio reached out, waving his hand in front of Afonso’s face. When that didn’t snap him out of it, or Anaïs reassurance he exchanged a look with her. Thinking for a moment he cocked his head to the side. “Hey, hey, nod if you think the Iberian Un-”
Afonso reached out and covered Antonio’s mouth before he could even finish the statement –snapping out of the dazed state. Yes! Mission accomplished. That always snapped him out of it.
Frowning Afonso glanced at Anaïs, keeping his hand over Antonio’s mouth. “I’m just worried you’ll get hurt Dorra… Ah, but I supposed that can’t be helped…”
He sighed, shaking his head. “We’ll... Find something for you to use.”
"A-afonso?" She stared at him, worried that she had said too much. Antonio tried to snap him out of it, but it didn't seem to work. Then he did what he always did, try o talk about something she didn't really understand, but for whatever reason made her feel somewhat uneasy. Thankfully, it worked.
She smiled sadly. "I'll probably get hurt. But don't worry, I can handle it now. You'll see!" She laid back onto the deck peering into the clouds. "I'll surprise you."
“You surprise me most days,” Afonso chuckled. His smile returned as he watched her. She was right. Anaïs could handle herself. He knew that better then everyone on La Madre Maria, with the exception of Anaïs that is. They wouldn’t be sitting on the deck if it wasn’t for her bravery… Afonso couldn’t help but think of how much he owed her.
Antonio meanwhile flailed slightly, trying to push Afonso’s hand away from his mouth. When he failed, he opted towards strategy number two.
“Irmao!” Afonso yanked his licked hand away, promptly wiping it on the Spaniard’s shirt. “How old are you?”
Antonio didn’t answer, instead lying back on the deck with Anaïs. After a moment Afonso rolled his eyes, but joined the two. They laid there in silence for a while, staring up at the clouds. It was Antonio who finally broke it, sighing as he smiled up at the sky.
“Ah~ It’s moments like this you treasure, hm?” So peaceful, almost innocent. Yes, he wished this moment could last forever.
She nodded, absolutely agreeing with him. "Si. Very much so." She wanted this to last for an eternity. But something caught her eye. She blinked. "Eh, what's that?" She pointed at something moving in the clouds.
If only they had known.
