Name: Anaïs Castillo
Country of Origin: Andorra
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Height: 5'3
Weight: 136 pounds
Appearance:
Anaïs doesn't have many unique quirks about her appearance. Not to say she isn't a pretty young woman, because she is, but she doesn't have any scars or birthmarks or anything out of the norm.
And she is perfectly fine with that.
She has a simple haircut; long hair past her shoulders, bangs cut just above her eyes, with a pretty chestnut brown colour. Her skin is fair, not too pale and not exactly tanned either. It confuses her parents, since she does work in the fields. Maybe she's just lucky? Or unlucky, if you prefer tanned skin. She has bright blue eyes, a cute little nose and lips that are not thick nor thin. She doesn't bother with make-up or anything like that, for she is a farm-girl by heart.
It's her clothes that represent a hidden love for fashion. Her clothes are not overly fancy, but they do have a certain flare to them that a lady on a farm would normally scoff at. She has her clothes for the farm, and they are of the norm; long trousers, simple shirts, boots, the like. But when the work is done and she has the time, she has a couple of lovely outfits she likes to wear. Number one, of course, is her traditional Andorran costume, which she does wear on special occasions such as festivals. Every Andorran owns these costumes and farmers are no different. These costumes are French and Spanish by design, very Catalan in nature. For ladies, and by extension, Anaïs, wears a full, mostly flowered skirt over a white petticoat; a blouse covered by a shawl; long black fingerless net gloves and black espadrilles [cloth sandals] and white socks. Anaïs' in particular is a white skirt with a red flower pattern, a black blouse and a black and gold shawl.
She has two everyday outfits. One being, a simple white dress down to her knees, with long sleeves that frills at the end. She wears a brown vest with a thin belt right above her hip line. She also completes this outfit with long black leggings and comfortable black flats. Sometimes she wears this outfit with a cravat, if she's feeling particularly fancy.
Her second everyday outfit is much more practical on say, a ship. Wink wink. She wears long pants, high black boots, and a long jacket topped off with a [stereotypical] French style hat. This outfit is almost exactly like a normal horse-riding outfit, as it follows the same guidelines. Her pants are a light colour, and her boots and buttoned jacket are black. Again, she may wear a cravat with it if she feels fancy.

Personality: Anaïs, to say the very least, is a very outgoing individual. If one is looking for a comforting, bright, and fun person, Anaïs definitely fits the bill. Incredibly optimistic and cheerful, she constantly seeks to make people happy. She's just naturally like this; no one taught her to be like the way she is. Confusing for her parents, but in the end it is a good thing.
Don't be surprised if she goes out of her way to make you feel better. Had a bad day? Here's a hug. Someone piss you off? Surely they didn't mean it, it'll get better! Contemplating suicide? Well, she'll lock you up and smother you with love, because you're worth saving. It doesn't matter who you are, she loves unconditionally. It is very very difficult to get on her bad side, and yes, she does have a bad side. Pity those who are; for they must be the epitome of evil to get someone like her to hate them.
But for all the good things that she is, she is of course, human[ish]. She is incredibly naive, to the point where it can be dangerous for her. She tends to see just the white, and either doesn't see the black or ignores it. Grey is unknown to her. As mentioned before, she loves unconditionally, which can be a double-edged sword. She believes there is good in everyone, and because of that, everyone can be trusted. And in a world of the pirate Age, this could be deadly. She is also almost incapable of reading the atmosphere, especially in a hidden negative environment. In her confusion, she may say something unwanted or unneeded, and the results could turn out the opposite of what she intended.
By all means, she is a good person, and she strives to stay that way. But she is not invincible to persuasion, and she is hurt easily. If one truly wanted to break her, they certainly could by teaching her just how cruel the world can be. One would have to be very complex and persuasive to change her, but it is possible. Tragedy and evil are but tools to corrupt the innocent, and she is very innocent. It is up to her if she is strong enough to make her own conclusions, and it is unknown of how such a predicament would turn out for her. She simply has not experienced that kind of humanity yet, and whether she takes it well or not is still a mystery. She needs to see the grey, and the black.
On a much lighter note, she still has her care-free and light hearted side. She is a lover of music; both instrumental and voice. She sings very well, as she was taught at a young age by her mentor. She also plays an instrument; a Spanish Timple which is similar to the popular Ukelele. Music is a passion of hers, and the idea of stage fright is just silly to her. During her days off, especially during festivals, she very pro-actively partakes in the musical aspects of everyday life by either participating in the festivals music competitions or by just sitting in the streets and singing and playing.
As the eldest of a large family, Anaïs has grown protective of her younger siblings. She tries to be a role model to her sisters and a caring hand to her brothers. She is mom when mom is too busy or away. Her siblings adore her, and the feeling is mutual for her. She has a close relationship with her parents, she dotes on them and they treat her with respectful admiration. Her parents love her like all of their children, but with Anaïs, they worry about her naivety. Because she knows them so well, Anaïs has picked up on their worry, and works hard to prove them that she is a responsible, helpful, and caring sibling and daughter. And yet, she still misses the point. That's our Anaïs!
History: At a young age, Anaïs was adopted into a loving family. As a child, she was an unusually warm and kind kid with an appetite of doing the right thing. She was raised as a pure farm-girl; hard-working, tough and not in the least girly.
Her parents didn't necessarily fail but, Anaïs certainly improved on the details.
Her family lives close to the Andorran mountains, not too far away from civilization but still needing a wheeled technology to get there. The family specialized in agriculture, a fading art in the recent years. Normally, a family in agriculture didn't make that much money; only enough to survive. Anaïs' family had a lot of money, or at least they did at one point. Why?
Let's just say, her family was one of the few that grew, well. An extremely desired plant-life. Of the smoking kind.
But even with a large sum of life, it didn't make the family work any less harder. Anaïs worked the fields [of fruit and vegetables, she wasn't yet allowed to work on the...other agriculture yet] for hours everyday. She didn't hate the work; she liked being busy. She lived a very active and normal life with a family of ten. She has six siblings, all younger, her parents, and her mentor Artista.
She has a very interesting relationship with him. He is a friend of her father's, and took it upon himself to mentor the girl when they first met. He was very teasing in nature towards her, but she idolized him. He taught her how to sing and play music and the several languages she knows. He didn't always live with them however, he constantly left to go off on adventures, usually bringing back a new story for her to enjoy. He was her first true friend, and she doesn't even know his real name. His easy and happy go lucky way of life greatly influenced her, and he was part of the reason she decided to leave. Because of him, she wanted the taste of adventure. More on that later.
Unfortunately for the family, they have been plagued with several thieves, intent on stealing all their crops and profits. Without their products, the family has nothing to sell, and their savings soon dwindled to barely hanging on. The police baffled by the identities of these thieves, and the family not willing to put their children in danger, there is not much they can do. Suddenly, the mood of her whole life quickly sank to depression. Her parents always stressed, fighting. Her siblings terrified they'd be killed in the night. And yet, they kept up their appearance of a family with no issue. Anaïs struggled to figure out what she could do.
When she turned seventeen, her birthday present was a few hundred dollars her parents had been saving up, and a goodbye. Her parents told her it was time for her to experience the world. Surprisingly, Anaïs instantly agreed. She knew they couldn't afford to keep her and take care of her, so she left willingly and happily. She never would have if not for the old stories Artista told her about his adventures. She decided it was time for her own adventure, to figure out how big the world was.
At least, this is the version of her life she knows and believes.
The truth is much more complex. It was indeed true that her parents adopted her, and she knows she was. But she doesn't know the reason. Her biological parents, and her adoptive parents, know what she is. Artista and his wife helped reincarnate the perished nation of Andorra and intended to raise her as a normal human, since they didn't know at the time of what she was. A government hell-bent on finding the reincarnated nations paid the happy couple a visit, demanding they turn their daughter over to them. Understandably, they were shocked to find out their daughter was the personification of Andorra, but they refused to give her up to the government to easily. They intended to use the micro nation as bait to draw out more important nations she was close to.
But they still couldn't protect her when they knew their identities. They painfully decided they had to give her away. Artista fled to his best friends, her adoptive father and mother, and fled to France with his wife. His wife was grief-ridden and eventually passed away. Foolishly, he wanted to still be a part of her life, and came back to visit her off and on again. But such was his love as a father.
As one may guess, the family is not plagued with thieves. The same government finally figured out where Andorra was residing and are still adamant with using her. Panicked, her parents gave her the only chance she could get and sent her away. Unbeknownst to them, Anaïs, after two weeks of tiring travel, stumbled upon a certain rumour of treasure and is determined to save them by bringing back a fortune of a life time.
Allegiance: Sky pirates!
How They Died:
You are my sunshine
Rain. It had to be rain. The skies are laughing at me, aren't they? Andorra peered up at the sky with tired eyes. It was a lonely grey colour of course; one should expect the sky to be grey when it rained. But for the young micro nation, it only added to the cruelty of the mess she was in. It was hard enough to run on an injured leg, let alone the mud that was forming on the ground. She gritted her teeth against the stinging pain she felt as she limped through her mountain. She had to keep going. She had to. If she stopped they would find her. And if they found her they'd... they'd...
my only sunshine
Her brothers looked like they were about to weep when she told them she would participate in the war. Although she was officially neutral in this war, she only declared that to keep her people safe. Andorra herself, however, decided to help France and the Allies to defeat the Axis. Even though she was terrified of doing so. But Andorra was loyal to a fault, and she could no longer stand by and wait for the news to announce another nation dying. It was her duty as a nation to protect those whom she loved.
But God, she was so tiny.
What could little Andorra do? What could she accomplish? A micro nation not many knew about nor visited couldn't help tide the war, right? Andorra didn't believe that. She may never be a hero like America, nor powerful like Russia, nor clever like England. But she could do something. And the way the war was going, the Allies needed all the help they could get. So Andorra went to war.
you make me happy
People told her that she had changed. Well, that was to be expected. Although she never went to the front lines, Andorra still experienced the horror that is war. She saw friends die, friends kill, hurt and be hurt. It was almost too much to bear. But she kept going and did her job.
The first thing people noticed was after a while, she stopped singing. Even when things were alright and no one had a worry, she never sang. When they asked about it, she said “I can't find my voice anymore.” But what they didn't know was the extent that it tore her apart. To her, singing was the epitome of happiness. Anyone who knew her knew that she loved to sing, that it was her passion.
But her passion died along with her hope.
when skies are gray
She tried her best to distance herself from her comrades. Nations often were warned to not get too close to humans, because well. Humans were fragile and could never live as long as nations could. But one was supposed to love their people to the very extent of their being. It was such a cruel contradiction. But Andorra found it very hard not to love humans. She was full of love, and that's why when they died she couldn't stand it. She found herself hating the Axis, hating Hitler and everyone they fought against. She hated so much that she lost sleep, and slowly, a bit of her love. What a sad, sad thing to lose.
you'll never know dear
But now, she was at the end of her rope. In the smuggling business, no one outright tells you that it's dangerous. That is something one finds out. And today, today was the end. The Germans came from no where. She had been relaxing with her comrades in their little camp at the border. They had a shipment to deliver, but they decided to rest for the night because they were ahead of schedule. They were all tired from the day's work. Could anyone blame them? They all had felt safe, even Andorra, who rarely did these days.
But then she heard gunfire.
how much I love you
Ten or so of her friends died in a matter of seconds. Others scattered, trying to find cover or a place to hide. Andorra tried to join them, but a bullet had found her leg first. But she still tried to help. She reached for a fallen gun; the Germans were distracted with the others for the time being. One of her allies screamed at her to run, and she didn't at first. But she saw in his eyes that he knew they were all going to die. And he, being human, decided that she was much more worth saving than his own life. He called the attention of the German soldiers, away from her. They all shot him at the same time. Blankly, Andorra crawled away, deciding to not let his sacrifice go to in vain. Tears ran down her face as she slowly stood up and broke into a run, the pain in her leg searing. She ran and ran, but alas, soldiers were better trained than most.
Rain began to fall. Too exhausted to continue, she leaned against a tree. She knew it was fruitless. She knew that she was about to become another news report about the latest nation dying. She didn't know if she wanted people to be sad. God knew how much it hurt her when she listened to those reports. But...it still somehow would be nice. And that was the cruellest truth of them all.
The shot that pierced her chest hurt. God, it hurt so much. She fell to the muddy ground, slowly moving herself to lay on her back. Blood trickled down her face, and she stared blankly at the grey sky. And Andorra could have laughed at what she felt next.
She wanted nothing more than to sing one last time.
What was that song again? One that was popular in America? It was such a pretty song, singing about someone special and how much someone loved them. About sunshine and love. Ah. Yes. She remembered. She took long, raspy breaths, getting her voice ready. She knew the lyrics in english, but she chose to sing it in her tongue.
“E-ets el meu sol
meu únic sol
Vostè em fa feliç
Q-quan el cel està gris...
Vostè mai sap, estimat
Quant T'estimo....”
please don't take my sunshine away.
