She shook her head at him. "I'm not. I really am a member!" She didn't say it like she was ashamed. It was a statement of fact, a part of who she was. She couldn't imagine not being with her crew, not doing her work. Not singing in front of them when they ate supper. She smiled. The Madre Maria was her home now.
She blinked at what he said next. "W-what?" Someone has been hanging around the Grim? "Who?" Surely there was a good reason...right? I mean, there was no way there was a traitor or something on her ship, no way! Maybe this person was...spying on them? Maybe it was just...a coincidence? But who was it? Then James changed the subject. "Ah, James! Who was it?"
He then started to talk about the animals. Ah well. She could ask him again later. "A koala?" She perked up. "How cute!" She appreciated his tendency to like cute and fuzzy animals. She made a noise that was a combination of a gasp and a giggle. "You didn't!" She smiled still. "But...if they were your friends, I can see why you did." She walked up beside him and leaned on the railing he was leaning on. "Do you know all of their names?"

Whether James actually heard her questions would forever be a mystery, as he made no notion to actually hearing them. He instead continued to lean forward on the railing, looking like he was about to pitch forward and into the enclosure. Of course, that could be on purpose, as James wanted nothing more than to just jump into the enclosure and visit with the kangaroos.
He did hear her comments about the kangaroos. Grinning proudly he nodded, continuing to pet the kangaroos head. ”Wasn’t a matter of friends, hand no where else to go.” Laughing at his own misfortune he looked back at the kangaroo he’d been petting. ”Though, they did become good friends. Donno all their names, since there are a few new ones but I know a couple! Like this one’s-” He patted the kangaroos head before looking at Anaïs. ”-Allison. She used to always jump over me when I was sleepin’. Would scare the daylights out of me!” He laughed again, this time at the memories, before pointing out to some of the other kangaroos that were hopping about, or sitting in the shade. ”Pretty sure that’s Lizzie over there… And Mason’s that one. Bill’s over there.” He continued, remembering as many of the names that he could. When he had finished he reached down until he was all but in the exhibit to pet one of the smaller joeys that had hoped over to them.
”You got any pets or friends? In Andorra or on your ship?” After all, may La Madre Maria was nice and let its members have pets, unlike the Grim. Not that that really stopped James from sneaking his friends aboard.

Disappointed that he did not clarify on who visited the Grim, Anaïs decided to bring it up later, when he least expected it. Maybe then she would get an answer. Boy, pirating sure taught you some things!
"Ah..." Her demeanor changed when he said he didn't have anywhere to go, at least back when he was younger, she assumed. Did he not have any family? A mother, a father? Siblings? She immediately felt sorry for him. She couldn't imagine life without a family, in fact, her life revolved around them. Then, what was his world?
Her smile brightened as he began naming the kangaroos he knew. She didn't attempt to pet them like he did, she was pretty sure you were not allowed to do that, so instead she nodded politely to the marsupials, as if they could understand such a gesture. She was glad to find out he had something to like, and something to look forward to. She supposed, in a way, these animals became his family.
Her eyes widened as he stepped into the exhibit. "W-wait!" She said that loudly at first, then realized they could get into real trouble if someone noticed. "Ah, I d-don't think we can go into the exhibits like that!" She whispered desperately.
Apparently he didn't hear her. "A-ah....I have lots of friends on my ship. I consider all of them my friends." She smiled. "In Andorra...I had a few friends from school...but they weren't.... well close friends. My family are my friends back home." She looked around, a worried expression on her face. "And I really don't think you can step in there like that!"

James hadn’t actually meant to fall into the exhibit. It had just kind of happened. One minute he’d been leaning in to pet the kangaroos, the next he was tumbling head first into it. Lying there for a minute he blinked, before laughing as more of the kangaroos hopped over to investigate just what had entered their territory
He laughed outright, grinning up at Anaïs – and whether he heard her concern or not would once again remain a mystery as James didn’t acknowledge it from where he was sitting.
”’s good to have friends on your ship!” He couldn’t help but agree, thinking fondly of the Grim and the people he’d met on it. Pushing himself up he brushed a bit of grass off his shorts, rolling his eyes as this time he heard her concern. ”Oh you worry too much Ace! It’s tota-”
”Hey! You! Get out of there!
”Uh-oh…” James turned his head, staring at the security guard that was hurrying over to them. The surprised look however faded into an impish grin. Jumping back over the fence he waved to the kangaroos before grabbing Anaïs’s hand. ”C’mon!”
He tugged her hand before taking off down the path, pulling her along. The guards shouts echoing behind them.

When the guard shouted at the two young teens, Anaïs very much resembled a deer caught in the headlights. She froze, wide eyed at the angry man. She agonized over the fact that this was the first time someone of certain authority was angry at her. She marathon-ed through her mind, coming up with the most sincere apologies she could think of, until James grabbed her hand and ran.
"Waugh!" She yelled, but instinctively running with him. They dodged their way through several crowds, eventually losing the guard. As she panted a wheezed, she continuously looked over her shoulder to make sure that guard still wasn't near. After confirming, it was then that she freaked out.
"Ahhh, oh gosh we're criminals now!!" She blinked, realizing the irony in that statement. "W-well, I guess we were criminals BEFORE....but still!"
But her fear was next to nothing up until she realized where they were. The large sign with the word "Arachnids" loomed above; teasing her about her childish, but very real, fear of those eight legged...freaks.
She tried to lead them away. "W-well I guess we should....keep going?" She attempted to hide her fear, but her voice cracked ever so slightly.

Snorting at her statement he couldn’t help but shake his head, waving it off like they had just been running for the hell of it. ”Nah! We’re fine~ Just havin’ some fun!”
After all, falling into an exhibit and sitting in it for a bit was the least criminal activity James had ever participated it. That and technically Ace hadn’t done anything herself. If anything he had made her an accessory to the “crime”. Oh well, he wouldn’t think too much on it! Instead he looked at where they had stopped in front of. He didn’t hear her comment about moving on, instead his eyes lit up.
”Ah! Let’s go check this place out! Bet they have a lot of beauties in here…” The thought that perhaps his new friend would be afraid never crossed his mind. After all the word ‘fear’ didn’t even seem to be part of his vocabulary.

Her eyes widened, and she had to suppress a terrified squeak as she watched her new friend wander carelessly into the building of arachnids. Her movements soon became rigid, almost robotic as she followed him, as slowly as she could. As the darkness engulfed her, she couldn't help but remember exactly how she obtained her fear of those eight legged abominations .
It began when she was six years old. A precious and wide eyed child she was, doted upon by her parents, but not enough to pamper her; after all she was still a farm girl. At the time, she was fine with spiders. They crawled around the house when she played with her toys, but they didn't bother her and she didn't bother them. That was the extent of their relationship, and how she wished it stayed that way.
One day, she was outside playing by herself. Despite her parents telling her not to, kids tended to do that, she wandered off farther than she normally would under supervision. Being six, of course she eventually got lost. The sun started to go down, but it was still light enough to see. Still lost, she desperately walked around, which resulted in her getting more and more lost. Then, it started to rain.
Cold and miserable, she took refuge in an old shack, which would also be a good landmark for when her parents searched for her. It was dark in this shack, but she didn't care as it shielded her from the rain. She sat in the middle, content on staying put. That was...until she felt something crawling on her. She jolted up, brushing at her clothing, terrified. She stumbled over and tripped, her face brushing against something that was moving. In fact, she could feel crawling all over her body; something brushed against her tiny hands, legs, down her back. It was so dark that she didn't know what was going on, or where the exit was. She did the only thing a six year old could in this situation. Cry. She cried and wailed so loud that her very worried and distraught parents found her easily. Their mistake was shining light inside the shack, illuminating it for everyone to see. Anaïs was in the middle of a nest. Of those eight legged monsters. The walls, floor, and ceiling were covered in moving black; and thousands of creepy-crawlies creep-ed around their shack. It scarred six year old Anaïs, and that scar still runs deep in seventeen year old Anaïs as well.
Present Anaïs walked through that building as if she were walking through a prison filled with serial killers. Giant tarantulas and the like crawled in their glass tanks, their horrifying bodies seemingly at rest. She followed James, who liked to get up nice and close. He went on and on about them, but it was lost on her, since she could only just stare at the creature inside, convinced it was pure evil. When James walked away from the first tank, Anaïs lingered, not noticing at first that he continued on. The tarantula took that opportunity to jump towards the glass as fast as it possibly could towards the horrified girl. She screamed, and immediately pressed her face into James' back and wrapped her arms around him, holding on for dear life. Those who would misinterpret this action be damned, there were monsters in this place!

Completely oblivious to his new friends panic James continued to walk through the house, grinning like a kid on Christmas. There were so many different types of arachnids, he couldn’t get over it! Getting up and close to the case he beamed at the tarantula inside the case, talking to Anaïs and completely oblivious to her terror.
”This guys such a beauty!” He grinned, tilting his head and looking at the beady eyed critter. ”Y’know some people call ‘em ‘whistling spiders’, or even ‘bird-eating spiders’.” He laughed at that, tossing his head back and blowing the two bangs that generally stuck up out of his eyes. Today they’d decided to just flop in his face, no matter what he did. ”Though they don’t actually eat birds a lot. Kinda ironic don’t’cha think Ace? I mean the name. Wonder why that’s one of their named that.”
Shrugging he continued onto the next case, rambling on and on. He’d always felt like a walking encyclopedia about the animals that lived in Australia. While he could probably chalk some of that up to spending so much time in a zoo and outdoors. But still… He couldn’t explain how he’d come across some of the facts. Just like he could never explain how he sometimes could just understand how an animal felt by just looking at them. Or strange déjà vu.
Maybe it had to do with his life before he lost his memories. Eh, James would chalk it up to that.
”They’re pretty harmless though, they aren’t that aggressive. ‘least from my experience. Their bites do hurt like hell, but those whistling spiders bites just make yo-“ He stopped short when he heard her scream, about to turn around when he felt a weight collide with his back. Stumbling forward he looked over his shoulder at her, eyes wide. ”Ace, hey you alright? What happened!?”

Immediately, Anaïs' race grew crimson as she realized that, wait a minute, she was hugging a guy she barely knew because she was scared by a spider. Her grip loosened, however she did not move, instead she chose to hide, but not from spiders but from the quiet chuckles she could hear from the people around her. What would Afonso or the Captain think about this?
Well, Afonso wouldn't be crazy about the whole hugging thing. The Captain...would probably encourage it. The thought of the two arguing over it did make her feel somewhat better, their arguments were usually pretty amusing!
She twitched when James asked her what was wrong. Saying it out loud only make it sound stupider! "I-I...I'm....terrified of spiders! I have been since I was little!" Arrrrrgh, what kind of pirate had this fear honestly?!

Blinking he continued to peer back at her. Why in the world was she hugging him? Or maybe she tripped and just fell? When she finally admitted that she was afraid all James could do was stare.
Then a small, almost disbelieving laugh escaped him. ”But their harmless!” Probably not the best thing to say and only after he’d said it did he realize it. ”I mean!” He added on quickly, but trailed off unable to actually come up with anything. She was really afraid of spiders? Looking forward he noticed the stares, scratching his cheek in a nervous manner.
Carefully he slipped out of her hug, taking her hand and tugging her forward towards the exit. ”Okay then! No more spiders! We can go somewhere else!”
